Our Story

6 months ago I was sitting in my room scrolling through my Facebook feed looking at my friend’s pictures in India hanging out, partying and having fun.

Of course, I was happy for them but deep down I was depressed, jealous and sad. This is something that not many immigrants talk about. When I was new in the country I tried going out as much I can, experience the western culture, made lots of kiwi friends, hung out with them, went to clubbing, surfing and did all the fancy stuff.

Fast forward, after two years I started missing things we used to do in India. That desi-ness was missing from life.

Realising I didn’t have many Indian friends. I started looking for ways to make some. A dear friend suggested, why don’t you make a post in your Indian Facebook groups and see if someone wants to catch up.

I took the advice and made a post asking if someone is interested to catch up in the city. In just 4 hours, I had 59 comments and 102 likes on the post.

I was so surprised by the response. I didn’t know there are so many people who are going through the feelings as I was. And then came up the idea of Indian Auckland Meetup. A place where all the kiwi-Indian can meet, have fun, discuss things, solve each other’s problems and have one day in a month where we can celebrate who we really are. I reckon one of the reasons the meetup is so successful (that most of the people wonder about) because the vision behind was never to make money, promote business or discuss political issues/list properties etc. but genuinely building a relationship and help one another.

This 6 months journey has been crazy. Growing from the 15 attendees to 79, having super active 1500 members in the FB group. More importantly building some last longing friendship, memories and overcoming the feeling that something is missing from life.

F.A.Q.
